Child’s pose for Hubby

torture-device-resting-on-brick-groundHubby has a phobia of restorative yoga. And I’m sure he’s not the only one. If you’re used to a more dynamic practice, the long passive holds and quiet spaces for the mind to go crazy in can be a bit daunting. For Hubby there’s a lot of bodily tension in general and a complaining sciatic nerve in particular that make him run away fast from me every time I look as though I’m getting out the blocks and bolsters. He doesn’t view them as supportive props but rather as some apparatus for torture.

So when I asked him if he’d like to join me today for some simple stretches he looked dubious. “Is this restorative yoga in disguise?” he asked. I reassured him not, while slightly having my fingers crossed behind my back. Transgression of satya? Nah, surely not — my intention was good after all!

supported child.JPGWe did some really, really simple stretches that were just about lessening tension from his shoulders and hips after a tough week at work and not resting well at night due to an on-going cold.

Once I’d lulled him with this, he was totally compliant in a long supported Bālāsana. In fact I thought he’d gone to sleep!

After that I tucked him up with a blanket and a cup of herbal tea and a heated cushion around his neck.

Sometimes less is definitely more.

    1. Sorry since yogibattle already commented I didn’t want to remove it completely, but I’ve made it smaller within the post and changed the cover photo so it’s not on the front page.
Sorry to freak you out — I guess that makes the point that restorative yoga really freaks Hubby out. He imagines it will be agony for him. But now I’m almost expecting him to ask me to set up for supported child’s pose again for him… almost!
