I met with a fellow new graduate this week. We caught up on life and work, and of course yoga. We both admitted feeling a bit disconnected with our practice recently. "At least you've been doing it, though" was her comment to me. For reasons of life changes and injury she's not been practising at home... Continue Reading →
Perfect yoga leggings
I wear a Ganesha pendant on a chain that I originally thought was long enough for it to disappear under my clothing most of the time. But it doesn't. And people keep commenting on it. A lot just recently, for some reason, so I'm feeling hyper-sensitive. At work people simply ask what it is; at... Continue Reading →
P*ssing about in yoga
I went to my penultimate Iyengar class (5/6 introductory classes done) this weekend. Arriving early at the Institute I decided to roll out my mat in the neighbouring park. The October sunshine was warm enough to roll lightly through some parts of my teaching sequence, establishing it in my body-brain ready for a few classes I'm leading this... Continue Reading →
My whispering heart
I bumped into a friend today who asked me how my early steps in teaching were going. I told her about the practice class I'd just done with two teachers at my local studio, getting ready for teaching a charity class there later in the week. The mentor teacher had offered me some quite amazing... Continue Reading →
Yoga imperative
We just started to learn the imperative in Sanskrit. Since our verbal paradigm is bhavati (to become) I felt on familiar ground with the forms bhavatu ('may he become')and bhavantu ('may they become') presented in the textbook. My teacher quoted to me from the Upanishads: Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah... And I thought of the mantra we use... Continue Reading →
Singularly depressing
Yesterday I was really looking forward to meeting up with some of the other graduates from my recent yoga teacher training course. And we had a pretty nice time together catching up and looking forward. But actually I came home really depressed. So depressed that when Hubby asked me if I had a nice time, I... Continue Reading →
Morning meditation
I have a slightly fragile morning meditation habit -- reignited thanks to daily TT routine which I've tried to continue with. This morning was threatened with derailment of a mundane kind -- Hubby being noisily up and about and an impending grocery delivery to the house to fit around... Not to mention me feeling tired and... Continue Reading →
The universe offers, believe it or not
In one of our assessments in TT we were given a sutra from Patañjali at random (we picked blindly out of a box) and we had to present it to the group a day or two later. The process of receiving a sutra was almost as interesting as the presentations themselves. I was struck by how... Continue Reading →
Who’s next to me?
Again a quick word from my TT whirlwind, to capture a moment, although I am too tired for careful words. Stay with me, my beloved readers. We've been given class by a few different teachers these past days. We're encouraged to talk about our experiences of them afterwards, as both students and student teachers. I confessed... Beloved hamstring
My hamstring is grumbling again at the moment. I can't deny I'm a bit scared by this: I start TT in less than a month and I can't help wondering what that would be like with an injury. But if it is, it is. I'll just have to figure it out. My classmates will also... Continue Reading →
