I hate yoga challenges, you might have heard me say this before. But now I’m thinking about setting myself one… Bear with me. I love to be contrary, you know!
So here’s the story:
A student of mine posted a lovely note on my FB page last week, telling me I’d been top of her gratitude list that morning, by way of thanks for my class. I was touched. But, argh, the daily gratitude list! Clearly it works for her, but I’ve tried this before and although I love the idea of it, I just don’t connect with it very well. I do feel grateful for all sorts of stuff every day (really I do!) but the act of verbalising it/writing it at some point after the event doesn’t connect. The closest I get is the gratitude I offer in various directions at the end of my yoga practice.
But I’ve been inspired to do my own kind of gratitude challenge. Inspired not so much by my student’s morning ritual, but by conversations with my teacher recently about change. He was getting me to think about why I still claim I want to see change through my practice and what that change might be. I’m still figuring this one out. There are several grand changes I’d like to see in myself — mostly about being more open to possibilities, less small, more expansive. That’s a big work in progress.
But I was really stuck by my teacher’s observations about the amount of change I already experience. More since starting yoga than most people experience in a lifetime, according to him. His opinion only, but I guess he’s seen more than a few yoga trajectories in the last decade or so of teaching. And I only see myself. So I was left feeling a little ungrateful about how different/better life is for me now.
Can I recognise one of these changes every day for say a month? Would that inspire more gratitude for what I already have? More wonder at how far I’ve come? More acceptance of the nature of the journey and trust in the process of transformation? I’m slightly daunted — I hate challenges after all! But I’m also inspired by my monthly meetings with my teacher, to think that I can explore something for a month and have some fun with it, and then just leave it and turn somewhere else. This isn’t my usual way of operating. But why not give it a try.
So I’m going to record my daily observation of something different about my life since taking up yoga. Just stuff that wouldn’t have happened or been possible a couple of years ago.
